Get rid of your carbon footprint
It is probably not a good idea to decarbonize with the Icelandic companies that offer such a service. One of them plants trees in Iceland which is not a great idea since we are fighting global warming and Iceland along with other landmasses on the northern part of the world, without forest works as a giant mirror reflecting sunlight in the long winter months when snow covers the ground and thereby cooling the earth.
The other one is regaining wetlands by filling up drain diches from the past, they are not officially approved since there is no way of measuring whether the dried wetlands are still producing co2 and, if not the heavy machinery used in this process is in its self polluting.

How much does it cost?
The cost varies from country to country and by which way the carbon correction is executed. The figures we use are from Kolviður, the Icelandic carbon fond.
Round trip by plane from the Uk to Iceland
The flight is around 3 hours each way. Total release is 0,5 tons of Co2 which means that you would have to plant 5 trees or pay 6,71 euros (1.017.- Isk)
Drive a small car around Iceland. Petrol
Lets say 2.000 km and the car consumes 6 liters /100km. Total release is 0,3 tons of Co2 which means that you would have to plant 3 trees or pay 3,62 euros (549.- Isk)
Drive a big 4x4 to the mountains in winter time (with or without a tour operator)
Lets say 300 km and the car consumes 20 liters /100km. Total release is 0,1 tons of Co2 which means that you would have to plant 1 tree or pay 1,81 euros (274.- Isk)
One night at a hotel
The carbon release of a hotel room varies from hotel to hotel. If you book your hotel through www.bookdiffrent.com you can get an idea what each and every hotel is releasing per room. The figures we have seen are from 1,9 kg to 36 kg per room per day. The figures are still estimated in most cases. Se how it is calculated here

Icelandair hotel Natura is estimated to release only 2,9 kg (0,0029 tons) of Co2 per room per night
That costs as little as 0,04 euros ( 6.- Isk )
Icelandair hotel Marina is estimated to release only 2,9 kg (0,0029 tons) of Co2 per room per night
That costs as little as 0,04 euros ( 6.- Isk )
Icelandair hotel Akureyri is estimated to release a bit more or around 4,9 kg (0,0049 tons) of Co2 per room per night
That costs as little as 0,07 euros ( 10.- Isk )
Grand hotel Reykjavík is estimated to release 3,6 kg (0,0036 tons) of Co2 per room per night

Carbon footprint per hotel
At BookDifferent we’re all crazy about travelling, meeting new people and discovering our beautiful planet. There are so many fascinating places you can spend your days. We want to make sure that the next generation can enjoy all these wonderful places as much as we do today. Therefore, we have added a Carbon footprint rating for each hotel on our website. This rating gives an indication of the amount of CO2 emitted during your night in the hotel and gives an indication of the environmental impact.
What is a Carbon footprint?
The Carbon footprint is an instrument used to measure the impact of our activities on the environment and thus the effect on climate change. CO2 is related to the emissions of all greenhouse gases we produce. For example: production, transport, heating and of course making energy from fossil fuels. Global warming is one of the consequences attributed to the increasing amount of CO2 emissions. Our climate is changing and this is a threat to humans and nature. The Carbon footprint for accommodations can be explained as the carbon dioxide emissions in kg per overnight stay.
How did we get these Carbon footprint report figures and with whom do we team up?
NHTV Breda University of Applied Sciences in cooperation with Hogeschool Zeeland and the Dutch tourism sector developed Carmatop project. The purpose of this project is to make carbon management possible by developing a carbon calculator. "Carbon" dioxide is the main greenhouse gas that is caused by the tourism industry. Within Carmatop a model is developed that can calculate the Carbon footprint of 550,000 accommodations in the world. The model is based on 300 known carbon footprints and some features of hotels, such as the number of stars and certain services offered like sauna, swimming pool and air-condition . Furthermore, the results are adjusted for climatic conditions and the characteristics of each country in the world.
How reliable are the Carbon footprint report figures?
Developments regarding Carbon footprints for accommodations is still in its infancy. The generated numbers are still an estimate. Therefore, in a number of cases, this value will be higher or lower than in reality. Although, the probability that an accommodation with a very high carbon footprint actually has a very low carbon footprint (or vice versa) is very low. It goes without saying that we do everything possible to promptly replace these estimated values in the shortest possible time for actual values.
